Research suggests collective bargaining has no net impact on overall faculty satisfaction, but negatively impacts satisfaction with workloads at 4-year colleges and universities (Krieg, Wassell, Hedrick, & Henson, 2013). http://faculty.wwu.edu/kriegj/Econ.%20Documents/Satisfaction%20IR.pdf

Research also suggests that, once geographic differences and endogeneity are adjusted for, collective bargaining has no statistically significant impact on compensation (Hedrick et al., 2011).

Rather than exemplifying democratic principles, Williams and Halcoussis (2014) suggest that unions operate in "decidedly undemocratic ways" (p. 213) and that the "consequences of undemocratic union representation was to marginalize racial minorities, women, and the young and to sanction union corruption" (p. 225). http://digitalcommons.law.umaryland.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1225&context=jbtl
